About the Program

For employees

The Temporary Foreign Worker Program provides foreign nationals with temporary work visas permitting them to remain in Canada and work on a temporary basis.

The Program is designed to assist employers secure the employees required to undertake the work Canadian citizens and permanent residents are not prepared to do. Typically, these have been unskilled labouring jobs on farms and in factories, however recently service industries, like restaurants and hotels, have also employed temporary foreign workers.

Most employers interested in hiring temporary foreign workers will require a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) to establish, firstly, that the work needs to be done, and, secondly, that no Canadian is prepared to do it. Once the LMIA is approved, foreign workers can be hired to fill the positions.
